  • Oriya Woman starts off Mission Mt Everest Kalpana Dash, the adventurous lady from Dhenkanal whom the mountains and forests always lured and who had a childhood dream of conquering the World's highest peak, started off on her
renewed attempt to scale Mount Everest after being given a warm send off by Governor Rameswar Thakur, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and other sports lovers in the Governor House. After the flag off ceremony in Raj Bhawan, Dash went straight to the Jagannath Mandir in Puri to seek Lord's blessing before leaving for Nepal. It will be Dash's second attempt to conquer Everest. In 2004, she could not make it to the top after climbing 7300 metres when she had to withdraw due to frost bite with the summit barely 1500 metres away. Last year was as miserable as the year before as she could not generate the requisite fund for the expedition though people of Dhenkanal, her home district, had organised a sponsorship campaign for her. However failure could not deter her and she has arranged about Rs 16 lakhs out of the total Rs 30 lakhs to be submitted at the end of her expedition and has urged people to donate for her cause. This time, many corporates have come forward with sponsorships and with well wishes from all, it is hoped that she will achieve grand success. • Assembly stalemate resolved After four days of noise and stalemate in the Assembly, Speaker Maheswar Mohanty and Opposition members agreed to work together. Normalcy was restored after the Speaker and the Opposition regretted their conduct in the House in a closed-door meeting and agreed that Assembly required a peaceful atmosphere to discuss important issues. Both Naveen and J B Patnaik were present at the meeting. Maheswar Mohanty stated that that he would settle the issue of the fine imposed on Congress members later. • Temple explosion revives terror in places of worship Post Bush-visit satisfaction of the government was broken when on Tuesday evening, two bombs exploded in quick succession at Varanasi's famous Sankatmochan temple and city cantonment railway station killing at least 12 people and injuring another 30. Unofficial death toll is stated to be more than 25 and may rise further.Though no organisation so far has staked its responsibility, Center swung into action asking the state to beef up security in communally sensitive places including places of worship, bus stops and railway stations. Varanasi is a volatile city with sharp divide between the two communities and since there was possibility of miscreants taking advantage of the situation, more para military forces have been rushed in to maintain vigil and prevent any untoward incident. On hearing the news, President and the Home Minister rushed to Varanasi on Tuesday night itself by special aircrafts. Police investigating the blasts are trying to ascertain if there was any link with the Ahmedabad Railway Station blast on February 18. Send your views to- orissainfoline@hotmail.com

  • After the blast Advani blasts UPA Government An hour long meeting of BJP reviewed the situation arising out of the Varanasi blasts and was attended by the party bigwigs such as Vajpayee, Advani, Brajesh Mishra and Yashwant Sinha. Later Advani stated that minority appeasement was to be blamed for the blasts at Varanasi and the ruling UPA Coalition was responsible for the same. Targetting the left parties for creating a bizarre situation where they are in the government but choose to oppose Bush visit for their own political gains prior to the elections in Kerala and West Bengal, Advani said that it were a few political parties who were spreading a culture of distrust and hatred between the Hindus and Muslims by promoting the minorities. In a statement issued later, BJP President Rajnath Singh condemned the dastardly terrorist attack on a Hindu temple and lamented that Uttar Pradesh had become another breeding ground of terrorists due to appeasement policy of Center and Mulayam Singh government.
